Jeff South is an associate professor and director of undergraduate studies in the Robertson School of Media and Culture at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he joined the faculty in 1997 under the mistaken impression he’d have summers off. Before moving into academia, he was a newspaper reporter and editor in Texas, Arizona and Virginia. At VCU, South teaches courses ranging from an introduction to mass comm to graduate seminars on data journalism. His students have won more than 20 awards for political reporting and other coverage. He has received fellowships to study independent news outlets in Russia, teach journalism in China and train journalists in Ukraine. As both a journalist and a journalism educator, South has carved out a specialty in using technology to find, report and tell powerful news stories. He has conducted workshops for SPJ, the Associated Press, the International Center for Journalists and other groups.
